INCOME & POWER

for Justice-Impacted PEOPLE

PLEASE NOTE: the application is CLOSED

Just Income, a PROGRAM of Community Spring, redistributes economic and political power through narrative shifting and a guaranteed income for people impacted by the justice system.

Too Poor to be Free

People coming home from prison face extraordinary debts and required fees, such as supervision costs, urinalysis, electronic monitoring, and mandatory classes. If these payments can’t be made, the person can be re-incarcerated.

Guaranteed Income

We provide temporary, unconditional monthly payments directly to people who have been impacted by the justice system - no strings attached. We believe a guaranteed income can unlock the inherent potential of our justice-impacted neighbors.

Just Income is an innovative program by Community Spring for people affected by the justice system in Alachua County, Florida. Developed and managed by formerly incarcerated people, this collaboration between our team, funders, and recipients is testing a simple and refreshing solution to poverty and inequality. We believe that the best investments we can make are in our people. Our past work demonstrates that a guaranteed income can help overcome barriers to successful reentry and unlock the inherent potential of our justice-impacted neighbors. We want to show supporters and skeptics alike that poverty is a failure of systems, not a personal one.

We are fundraising for our guaranteed income program.

2022 - 2023 IMPACT REPORT

Our pilot year of disbursements finished in February 2023, and we learned a lot. Recipients shared how they used their unrestricted income to fulfill essential needs like housing, utilities, groceries, and reliable transportation. They've made forward-looking decisions by resolving legal fees, improving employment situations, pursuing entrepreneurship, tending to their physical and mental well-being, and building up savings. The income floor enabled recipients to not only support themselves and their families but also experience a sense of hope, forge connections within their communities, and dedicate quality time to their children.
